1. Rules for academic conduct on tests and exams

Note: This information is relevant to all classes offered by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. Your instructor may provide additional information regarding academic (mis)conduct for your particular class.

  • Beyond those items that your instructor has specifically listed as permissible on a test or exam, you cannot use any other aids or materials when writing tests and exams.
  • You are not allowed to use the internet to search for solutions.
  • You are not allowed to use forbidden electronic equipment or software to help answer questions.
  • You are not allowed to communicate with anyone besides your instructor and the Zoom proctors during a test/exam period.
  • Unless you have explicitly been told otherwise by your instructor, your computer, tablet, cell phone, etc., can only be used to access the exam, as a webcam during Zoom-proctoring, and to upload your solutions.
  • You must complete your work independently. You cannot work with any other student, or anyone else.

Notes on academic misconduct (cheating)

  • The consequences of cheating are severe and irreversible. Students who have been caught cheating always experience profound stress and regret. It is always better to give an incorrect answer and not cheat, than to compromise your integrity.
  • A good friend will never ask someone to help them cheat.
  • Your instructor is skilled at spotting academic misconduct (cheating).
  • Evidence of academic misconduct will be reported.
  • Do not cheat; the consequences are not worth it.

2. Student oath for tests and exams

On all tests and exams, students will be required to write the following statement:

I hereby confirm that I have read, understand, and will follow the Rules for Academic Conduct outlined above. I understand that there will be serious consequences to not following these rules.”

3. University of Â鶹´«Ã½ information on academic misconduct

Students are expected to read and understand the academic misconduct policy and procedures section of the University of Â鶹´«Ã½ academic calendar (see part 8.a).

4. Generic test and exam rules

Note: These test and exam rules may be modified and expanded by your instructor to suit the specific needs of your class. It is your responsibility to read the rules for each test and exam you write.

Handwritten solutions

  • You are not permitted to write your test/exam solutions on a tablet or iPad. Solutions must be written on paper, photographed or scanned, then uploaded to Crowdmark or Nexus.

Tools that you can use on this test/exam

  • You can use paper, pens, pencils and erasers.
  • You can use your computer, tablet, or cellphone to access the exam online, to access Zoom, and to upload your solutions. (Unless explicitly stated otherwise by your instructor, you cannot use your computer, tablet or cellphone for any other purpose.)
  • Other permitted tools and resources will be determined by your instructor and will vary between classes. Your instructor will provide the class with a specific list of permissible items prior to your tests and exams, and will list these items here. (For example, in some classes, you will only be allowed to use paper, pencils and pens; in other classes you may be allowed to use a calculator or a formula sheet.)

Tools and resources that you cannot use on this test/exam

  • You cannot use any items that are not listed above. In particular, you cannot use a calculator, cellphone, laptop, tablet, or any other electronic device for any purpose beyond those outlined above.

(Your instructor may also list some specific items that you cannot use here; these rules will also vary between classes.)

Uploading your solutions

  • You must upload your solutions yourself, without the help of anyone else. (Your instructor will provide instructions to follow in the event that you experience technical difficulties and are unable to upload solutions.)

5. Zoom proctoring information

Learn more information on Zoom proctoring.

Note: This information is relevant to all classes offered by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. Your instructor may provide additional information about the Zoom-proctoring of tests and exams in your class.

6. University of Â鶹´«Ã½ Zoom-recording statement

Tests/exams are proctored through a live Zoom meeting and may also be recorded for later review. Proctors will be monitoring for any evidence of academic dishonesty. Each proctor will monitor a small group of students simultaneously. Students must sit and face an engaged camera to enable monitoring. Microphones should be muted.

As part of this monitoring, please note:

  • Each student’s name and everything within their camera’s view, including their face, body and background, will be visible to the proctor and to the other students within the group.
  • If a student uses the chat feature, anything written will be visible to all meeting participants.
  • If a student chooses to un-mute their microphone, anything said will be heard by all meeting participants.

Zoom has been configured to disable students from recording the test/exam.  After being reviewed for academic dishonesty, any recordings made by proctors will be deleted if no such evidence is found.
