Research Interests:

My research group employs molecular, statistical and in silico approaches to study the evolution of genomes and gene families, as well as projects in molecular population genomics and evolutionary genomics. The two main study research themes in the laboratory at present concern the evolution and function of the relaxin family of peptide hormones and their receptors in vertebrates as well as the mechanism of sex differentiation in lamprey species. For our work on the relaxin family of peptide hormones, we are currently examining the role of the gut hormone - Insulin like peptide 5 (INSL5) in gut-immune-microbial interactions using both mouse and Japanese medaka as models. Our work in lamprey is done in collaboration with Dr. Margaret Docker, in which we are looking at the genetic pathways underlying gonadal sex differentiation, and the evolution of the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis.
