This course will examine numeracy from several perspectives, including cognitive and critical. Numeracy can be considered as a critical response to mathematics education. This theoretical groundwork is then explored in terms of responding to the learning needs of all students, as well as examining closely what is foundational in mathematics.

This course will critically examine formative and summative assessment, including norm referenced and criteria referenced approached, as they pertain to mathematics learning. (Numeracy across K-12 is a prerequisite*)

This course starts with the assumption that the Manitoba Mathematics curriculum is rooted in colonial values. By unpacking our colonial heritage, this course will examine teaching practices and lived curriculum in terms of responding to the education calls to action of the TRC as they pertain to mathematics learning. Research on Reading focuses on cognitive understandings of reading and investigates concepts such as phoneme awareness, phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, decoding, fluency, comprehension and higher order thinking. In addition, the course explores research on how to teach these concepts to support neurodivergent learners.

This course explores the role of English Language policy and education in the colonization of Canada with a particular focus on investigating the use of English language education in the residential school and the responsibility of language arts teachers to do reconciliation work. The course provides a space for developing critical counter-colonial practices in one’s approach to teaching English and includes discussion on supporting Indigenous language resurgence, Afrofuturism and other cannon-challenging practices in transcultural spaces.

Critical and Socio-cultural Literacy Practice in the Digital Age explores threshold literacy theories such as language acquisition, zone of proximal development, critical literacy, situated practice, and multimodality in relation to contemporary research that questions and explores the use of digital resources and applications in mediating literacy education, social interaction and composition.

This course is designed for in-service teachers to enhance their inclusive instructional practices in the areas of literacy and numeracy. There will be a focus on strategies to support diverse learners, including students with disabilities, English Language Learners (ELLs), and students from various cultural backgrounds. Teachers will explore evidence-based inclusive practices, differentiated instruction, and assessment techniques to ensure all students can access these key curriculum areas and achieve success.
