JULY 1, 1967: Constituted as a University for the first time, the institution took on administrative autonomy like the University of Manitoba: with powers to appoint degrees and certificates beyond theology and divinity and to institute new programs.  It retained relatively the same administrative structure as before, with an elected President, Board of Regents, and Board of Directors.  Dr. Lockhart, the Principal of United College, became the first President of the University of Â鶹´«Ã½.  The Act operated under an Order-in-Council and was not technically passed into law until 1998.  Celebrations for the Act were held at the beginning of the University’s first academic session on Charter Day, September 15th.
